Best Name Brand Kitchen Cookware

I have had this set of pans for over 2 years now. We purchased them following our wedding – and got wonderful extras at that time with the purchase. We cook on them pretty consistently and have not had any problems. It is true they are minor stick, but a little oil tends to keep them in check when cooking. Additionally, there is a bit of starchy residue – as others have mentioned – that appears after cleaning. I tried initially to get it off and had some success, and eventually I just let it be. Thus far it has not affected the cooking or the thermal properties of the pan. It still cooks wonderfully, has great weight and good seal on the lid. Because of my enjoyment of these, I have purchased additional Calph One pans to go along with this.

In addition to this set, I do recommend a couple axillary pans such as a small non-stick skillet for eggs, etc, and a deep, straight sided pan such as the saucier. Both are wonderful compliments to the set.

In the end, I decided against the All-Clad because of uncomfortable handles, much higher price, and inability to stick in the dishwasher. That left Calphalon and Cuisinart. In this video, I give a “tour” of the Calphalon set, from lids to handles, as well as compare it to a Cuisinart Multiclad Pro Stainless 1-1/2-Quart Saucepan with Cover and to a bottom-clad Rohe pot. Yes, these Calphalon pots are both dishwasher- and oven-safe. Note: the coppery color on the pots is a reflection of the hardwood floors and NOT actual copper. The exterior is 100% stainless steel.

After a mere 16 months I have to replace this cookware set because all of the nonstick coating from the bottom of the pans has apparently been an unwelcome addition to the family dinner. I will not make the mistake of paying BIG money for an overpriced, poor quality cookware set again. I’ve done my homework this time around and won’t leave my choice up to thinking because I paid more that that would in any way reflect quality. I will never again buy nonstick. It will be stainless steel for me and it will NOT be Calphalon.

I purchased this set almost two years ago. Back then, the price for this set was $150, so I got an even better deal. Prior to that, my only other pans were my lodge cast iron skillets, and some other very poor cheap pans. For the first year, the pans held up tremendously. I cooked 4-5 times a week, and often cooked meals for over 20 people using just these pans. They heated fairly evenly, and produced great results. They made cooking so much more fun as I could make food that was impossible with poorer quality pans. However, as my cooking has developed, and I moved to higher-end pans such as the Calphalon tri-ply, Calphalon-one nonsticks, and my all-clad stainless pieces, I’ve begun to see a lot more faults with this set. For one, the non-stick coating has begun to peel and flake miserably. The 10″ skillet, which I have used probably 5x more than the 8″ skillet is now unusable. No, they have never been in a dish washer or abused with metal utensils. I wanted a traditional fry pan, and decided to purchase the calphalon tri-ply 12″, and immediately noticed a huge difference. The clad pan heated much more rapidly, and much more evenly. It was just better in every way, and since then, I eventually moved on to purchase a 10 piece all clad stainless steel set, and felt that it was worth every penny. I understand that not everyone can spend $500-$600 dollars on a set of pans, but I would really suggest that you try to save up a little bit longer and go for the calphalon tri-ply or the all-clad if you can. I’ve since used clad pans just as much if not more than the Simply Calphalon pans, and they still perform as new. The Simply Calphalon pans seem to take longer to heat up now and have developed hot spots. They’re still very usable, and I can still make great food with these pans, but I think that saving up for a little bit more for the higher end pans would have saved me money in the long run, and space in my kitchen. But, if $200 is all you have, this is definitely a fantastic set and well worth the money. I would also look at the Kirkland Set, which I bought for my mom and have used extensively. They’re very different, as they’re hard anodized, solid aluminum pans, and must be treated and approached differently – it just depends on what you’re looking for.

I bought this set, along with a single anozidized fry pan to complement it. I love the non-stick for its ease of use — it cooks wonderfully due to the heat conduction capabilities and cleans like a dream! You can also brown better in this non-stick than in others I have tried.

I liked it so well I just bought a set for my niece for her wedding gift!

Compare with the anodized version: I love the anodized version too. While it does not behave like a non-stick, it is better than stainless skillets (I am not sure it would be better than a well-seasoned cast iron skillet) but it behaves admirably when I want a higher temperature sear (e.g., seared tuna). A quick soak removes what sticks on and it cleans up real well.

So I heartily recommend both the anodized and the non-stick!!

First a comment on some of the specific complaints I’ve seen in the review: These are stainless steel. The are not non-stick. If you are going to fry eggs and the like, you should pick up a tefflon-coated skillet (remember that non-stick-coated pans tend to last only a half-decade or so, are limited to 450f, and are generally not dishwasher-safe). Also: if you over-heat these, or put in the wrong things, they will discolor. This can be removed relatively easily with Barkeeper’s Friend (or LemonJuice I am told). If you misheat, or under butter/oil, things will stick.

So why get Stainless? It will last far longer than tefflon. It will carmalize better than aluminum. It won’t interact with foods. It is oven safe to very high temperatures (though the glass lids are only safe to 450, pick up some steel lids if you need to). They are far more rugged (can use metal utensils, though I don’t; can use the dishwasher, though I don’t).

I’ve been very happy with these so-far. They have performed better than expected (the aluminum core is quite good at moving heat) and are beautiful. Right now they are in their “somewhat scratched” phase, which is the least attracive (it’s between “pristine” and “uniformly scratched so it looks ‘brushed’”), and I’m proud to show them off. I just need to pick up a Sautisse and I should merrily cooking for many years to come.

Food cooks better, more evenly than the cheap Tfal I had. No sticking problems. Would like a smaller pan in the set. Easy to clean the interior with the Dobie pad. More trouble to keep the exterior clean. The large sauce pan came with a scratch on the rim and I am considering exchanging it. Love the clear glass tops. Handles do get hot. Pots are heavy and have aggravated my tennis elbow.

I was given this set a year and a half ago and so far have had to send back three pieces because of the nonstick finish. I will say I like cooking with the anodized – it heats faster and retains heat well so it is easier to cook with. But the nonstick finish they put on this cookware is terrible. It flakes off and scratches easily. I baby them, follow all directions, etc. only use silicone or wood utensils. In my opinion the surface should not scratch if you are using an approved utensil. Calphalon has been good about honoring their warranty and have replaced everything I sent back so far but I am getting tired of having to keep sending things back. As money permits I am gradually replacing mine with Le Creuset. I don’t know if the higher end Calphalon is better, but I can’t bring myself to spend the money on it with the experience I’ve had with this set.
